Sydney Ferries: Manly, Taronga Zoo, Watsons Bay & Parramatta

Sydney Ferries from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo, Watsons Bay and Parramatta, plus Perth to Rottnest Island: crossing times, frequency and operating days.

📋 Essential Pre-Departure Checklist

  • ✓Weekday Watsons Bay ferries run only in the middle of the day: check before heading out
  • ✓Taronga Zoo ferries are more frequent at weekends
  • ✓Rottnest Express’s Perth departure does not run on Wednesdays

Circular Quay: the hub

Sydney Ferries’ harbour routes start at Circular Quay. Taronga Zoo is a 12-minute crossing (F2), every 30 minutes Monday to Friday and every 20 minutes at weekends and public holidays. Watsons Bay (F9) is about 23 minutes away, every 30 minutes at weekends (07:45–23:45) but only half-hourly between about 09:45 and 15:45 on weekdays.

Up the river to Parramatta

The F3 Parramatta River ferry takes about 1 hour 25 minutes from Circular Quay to Parramatta, with roughly hourly through-services and frequent shorter trips on the lower river.

Tickets, access and timetable quirks

Pay with an Opal card or a contactless bank card, tapping on and off at the wharf. Circular Quay’s wharves adjoin Circular Quay train station and the light rail, and Transport for NSW says all ferries on the network are wheelchair accessible. Watch for two quirks: some weekday peak and evening F9 trips terminate at Rose Bay rather than Watsons Bay, and on the Parramatta River low tides mean buses replace some ferry services between Rydalmere and Parramatta.

Perth to Rottnest Island

In Western Australia, Rottnest Express’s Perth Premium Ferry Service leaves Perth at 9:30am daily except Wednesdays and takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. It does not run from 27 November 2026 to 31 January 2027, when peak-season sailings are published separately. It leaves from the Barrack Street terminal at Pier 4, near Elizabeth Quay station, and Rottnest Express offers a complimentary city hotel pickup.
